Domaine du Couvent Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnet Premier Cru 2021
Domaine du Couvent may be a new producer – and this, only their second vintage – but you need not doubt their pedigree. With winemaker Philippe Chéron and his son, Paul, at the helm… you’d be hard-pressed to find a more revered winemaking team in all of Burgundy, especially when it comes to the vineyards of Gevrey-Chambertin. Totalling roughly 25 acres across the Côte de Nuits, this domaine arose from opportunity, and the merging of two highly-regarded estates, namely Domaine Misset-Chéron and Domaine des Varoilles.
The ‘Champonnet’ vineyard for this bottling is a natural extension of the famed Grand Cru of Ruchottes-Chambertin – a prime site in the valley of Lavaux. Couvent’s parcels here are planted on solid limestone, with the lower parcel bringing in some clay. The vines are anywhere from 30-60 years old, and organically farmed to ensure both vine health and intense concentration of fruit. The wine is simply classic Gevrey-Chambertin – where power, depth, and perfectly ripe fruit intertwines to create a rich and imposing pinot noir, with a finely-sculpted brawniness that never comes off clumsy. Red fruits of cherries, raspberries, and strawberries lead out the glass, with black tea and plenty of wild herbs to follow. The iron and earth finish gives this structure and presence – and the wine’s synergy lingers for a minute or more. Impressive stuff – but only a handful of cases to share! At $75 off, this is a A-lister deal for the ages! Respond to this email with your purchase request and we'll do the rest.
