Figli Luigi Oddero Barbaresco Rombone 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 The Wine Independent -
The 2019 Figli Luigi Oddero Barbaresco Rambone has a sweetly fragrant nose with aromas of vivid red fruits, crushed roses, heady strawberries and cream and lovely floral notes. It has lots of firm persistent tannins, but there is a thread of bright redcurrant fruit that runs through the wine. Intoxicatingly beautiful! The Rambone vineyard is in Treiso which has cooler night-time tempertures that are so important for the accumulation of aroma and flavor. Their vineyard faces south-east and at an average altitude of 350 metres above sea level, magnifying the effects of the gentle morning sun and cool nights.
95 Wine Enthusiast -
This elegant red has enticing scents of wild berry, blue flower, botanical herb and baking spice. Savory and focused, the palate features sour cherry, cranberry and star anise framed in taut, refined tannins and fresh acidity. Drink 2024–2031.
92 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The Figli Luigi Oddero 2019 Barbaresco Rombone is tight and streamlined with typical Nebbiolo aromas that reveal themselves slowly as the wine begins to open. The wine's intensity remains moderate throughout, and this softer approach works well to enhance the more delicate and nuanced sides of this mighty red grape from Piedmont.
91 Raffaele Vecchione - WinesCritic.com -
Ripe and engaging, it shows notes of slightly dehydrated red plums, lime, spreadable cheese and chinotto. Full body, soft, well-ripe tannins and a genuine finish that extends well into the sip. Better from 2024.

Figli Luigi Oddero is a titan of Piemonte – a revered and iconic producer that we’ve hyped for years! 96 points and a BEST in the USA price of under $40 on 6+ bottles – do not miss!

Cru Barbaresco under $50 has become quite the rarity these days – especially from the fantastic and historic hands of a producer like Figli Luigi Oddero. We scored ourselves a little cache of some of their best – and while it's not much – the fastest clicking and most hardcore of you Piemonte purists are gonna flip over this one.

Located in the tiny northwestern Italy-corner commune of La Morra, Figli Luigi Oddero has a wine history in the region dating back to the 1800s, when Luigi’s grandparents served as winemakers and merchants. Luigi became enamored with wine himself, enthusiastically learning all he could about growing and making world-class Piemonte wines. Since his passing in 2010, the family has continued to uphold his name and reputation – even bringing on the great Dante Scaglioni (and his 25+ years of experience at the incomparable Bruno Giacosa estate), alongside his protege, Francesco Versio, to drive the portfolio to even greater heights.

This 96-point 2019 from the Rambone Cru does just that – a monumental effort that elegantly captures the beauty of Barbaresco, with the inherent power and longevity of Rambone’s high-elevation site. The Cru’s meager soils – composed of white/grey marl atop sandy clay on sloping hillsides just outside of Treviso – make for tiny nebbiolo grapes of incredible concentration, while the cool nights ensure a long, even ripening with ample structure and acidity.

The result is compelling, with stainless steel fermentation and larger oak aging allowing the character of the site to show through – expressing myriad notes of strawberries and roses, with black pepper, tar, and waves of minty freshness and spice percolating this all at a very high frequency. Energetic stuff, to be certain, with a freshness that perseveres into a long, complex finish with plenty of silky tannins leftover to secure decades of life yet to come. One critic called this “intoxicatingly beautiful” and we’re quite inclined to agree! For under $40 on 6+?! Don’t hesitate – this 96-point beauty is sure to fly!!!

PAIRING IDEAS: On young Cru Barbaresco like this – some extra unctuousness really balances out the intensity. I’m going for creamy polenta, topped with arugula dressed in lemon, and plenty of grilled hanger steak over all! A little red wine reduction cut with cream and toasted hazelnuts takes this to the next level.

About the Producer

Oddero’s complex and extensive holdings encompass vineyards in La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, and Serralunga d’Alba, with smaller plantings in Barolo and Monforte d’Alba, as well as a rented parcel in Treiso in Barbaresco—comprising 31 hectares in total, 21 of which are Barolo. In addition to their classic Barolo “Tradizionale” (a blend of many parcels), they produce several single-cru wines: “Specola” (from the Rive cru in La Morra, just next to the winery); “Rocche Rivera” (from the pure-south-facing upper part of the Scarrone cru in Castiglione Falletto); and “Vigna Rionda”—a legendary Serralunga d’Alba cru widely considered one the greatest sites in all of Barolo. The estate’s Barolo “Tradizionale” is a complex assemblage of various prime parcels, vinified and aged separately, with the final blend determined through tasting trials. Fermentation occurs in cement without the addition of yeasts, and aging takes place in huge oak botti of 65 to 85 hectoliters capacity. This is a gorgeous, elegant Barolo of arresting purity, offering high-toned spices, deep red fruits, a background note of mouthwatering salinity, and a long, graceful finish buttressed by tannins that hug warmly rather than squeeze forcefully. It is undeniably traditional, yet rendered with great sensitivity, and the wine's natural power takes a backseat to an overarching impression of harmony and freshness.
